Where

Because the captivating Pangong Lake is located on the Sino-Indian Actual Line of Control, a permit to visit it is required. Individual permits are easily obtained by Indian nationals, whereas other foreign nationals must obtain a group permit with at least three people in the group, accompanied by an accredited guide. For a small fee, the permit can be obtained at the tourist office in Leh. Because of its altitude, Pangong Lake’s temperature ranges from -5°C to 10°C, causing it to freeze completely during the winter despite its salinity. Pangong Lake, the most popular tourist attraction in Ladakh, is an endorheic (landlocked) lake located at 4350 metres. It is also known as the Pangong Tso and stretches from India to Tibet. The Tibetan Autonomous Region contains nearly 60% of Pangong Lake. The lake’s unique feature is that it does not stay blue all year or even all day; rather, it changes colours from azure to light blue to green and grey! It is well-known among tourists as Ladakh Lake, where the Bollywood film “3 Idiots” was filmed.

Q Pangong Lake Camping

Camping near the lake is no longer permitted. Tangste, 32 kilometres from Pangong Lake, is the ideal place to live. There are also places to live in and around the vicinity of Lukung, which is also nearby and has the provision of eco huts. However, one can stay in Leh, which has a variety of lodging options, and take a day trip to the lake.

Q Pangong Lake and its Connection to Bollywood

The unadulterated natural beauty of Pangong Lake makes it a favourite shooting and filming location for directors. Several blockbusters have been shot here, including Dil Se, 3 Idiots, Heroes, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Sanam Re, Waqt, and Tashan, among many others. The Bollywood junkie in you will feel like a celebrity here!

Q Pangong Lake in Winters

Pangong's landscape transforms into a shimmering and snowy extravaganza during the winter. The mountains are a kaleidoscopic contrast, with sand dominating one side and snow appearing on the other. Pangong Tso freezes to a stunning turquoise, and you can even walk all over it. The sun doesn't make an appearance, and fog blankets the landscape. However, the temperature here can drop to -14°C at night, so bring plenty of woollens!

Q Pangong Lake Weather & Best Time to Visit

Pangong Tso is best visited in the summer, specifically from June to September, because the vacation would be less enjoyable in the winter due to the extreme weather and high altitude, and the lake would be frozen as well. A summer visit will allow you to see various migratory birds and other flora and fauna.

Q What You Should Know

1. It is recommended that more and adequate warm clothing be carried in order to withstand the cold weather.
2. It is an environmentally sensitive area where littering is a serious offence. Please dispose of your waste responsibly.
3. Boating is not permitted on the lake for security reasons.

Q How to reach Pangong Lake

It is a breathtaking 5-hour drive from Leh, with the entire route being the pinnacle of scenic beauty. The lake is located on the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control, and you must obtain Inner Line permission. Because the Pangong Lake is so close to the border, you will only be permitted to visit up to the Spangmik village.

You must travel through the Changla Pass and then Tangste from Leh. There are also regular buses provided by the state road transport corporation. In addition, taxis, motorcycles, jeeps, and cars can be rented at reasonable rates. Because there are no petrol stations in Pangong, make sure you have enough fuel in your vehicle.

The drive from Leh to Pangong is thrilling in and of itself. Because the drive is exhausting (though breathtaking), it is best to avoid returning on the same day.
