Kovalam is a charming beach town in Kerala. Translating to mean ‘a grove of coconut trees’, Kovalam’s name is truly deserved as many coconut trees surround the city. The three sandy beaches separated by rocks in Kovalam draw a lot of tourists to this picturesque little town. Samudra Beach, Hawa Beach, and Lighthouse Beach are the names of these beaches. Aside from its beautiful beaches, Kovalam is also known as a wellness hotspot. The majority of Kovalam’s resorts provide Ayurvedic massages, as well as yoga, herbal body toning, and meditation sessions. The Kovalam Surf Club on Lighthouse Beach offers basic surfing lessons and rents out surfboards to those interested. Kovalam hosts a number of interesting cultural programmes. Swati Thirunal Music Festival, Nishagandhi Dance Festival, Fandango (food festival), Elephant Festival, and Kovalam Village Fair are among them. Catamaran cruises are also popular among visitors to Kovalam.

1. Beach Lighthouse
The Lighthouse beach is the largest in Kovalam and is named after the 30-meter-high lighthouse that stands on the beach. It houses an observatory, which can be accessed via a lift or by climbing a flight of 142 stairs. The observatory offers a stunning panoramic view of the beach, as well as views of the Poovar and the famous Beemapalli mosque.

2. Honolulu Beach
Hawa Beach has water sports facilities and is notable for its palm groves that line the shore. People come from the bus stop and the train station. It's also a great place to try the local cuisine in the small restaurants near the beach. This beach has the best sunset views and also offers an experience in the mornings when the fishermen set out into the sea chanting and singing folk songs.

Q Shopping in Kovalam

Kovalam has some exciting shopping opportunities. Beautiful silk sarongs, colourful lungis, and exquisite ornaments made from seashells are available for purchase at the Kovalam Lighthouse beach, along with other trinkets. The Heritage Handicrafts shop sells teak wood crafts and other souvenirs. The Joseph and Sons shop sells authentic Malabar spices and other condiments such as cardamom, fenugreek, and saffron. The SM Handloom Centre is a good place to get some traditional clothing.

Q Nightlife in Kovalam

Kovalam's mellow nightlife can be enjoyed at one of the town's few bars. The Sky Bar at Leela Kempinski is a great place to unwind with good food, drinks, and a stunning view. Other good options include the Taj's Neera Bar and The Bar. Kovalam's nightlife is generally low-key, with a soothing mix of great music interspersed with drinks and food.

Ayur Kerala Ayurvedic Centre, Lakshmi House Ayurveda and Spa, and Chakra Ayurvedic Resort are some popular massage centres. They provide numerous treatment options, including rejuvenation therapy, body purification therapy, anti-stress treatment, and rheumatic therapy, among others. Some places, such as the Chakra Ayurvedic Resort, offer special packages during the monsoon season, which is thought to be the best time for treatment. The Leela Beach Resort Kovalam, India's only cliff-top beach resort, is also a good option.

Q Restaurants and Local Food in Kovalam

Fish, fruit salads, chicken, and traditional Malayalee dishes are available. Along with this, you'll find the ubiquitous Idli, Dosa, Vadas, and Uttapam, as well as an almost exotic range of seafood, as in many other areas. Crabs, prawns, lobsters, and other seafood are included in this category.
Occasionally, slightly Indianised Israeli and European fare is available. Alcohol is widely available, but it must be consumed discreetly.
